I have known [Abraham] in order that
he command his children and his household after
him that they shall keep the way of God, doing
tzedaka and justice (Bereshit 18:19)
In this verse, God explains the reason for
His relationship with Abraham and his descendants,
the Jewish People. The Jew is called upon to
be a practitioner of charity and justice and
to communicate those values to the next generation.
We are not only called upon to give with our
money but also with our time. In a beautiful
Talmudic passage, the Sages explained that lovingkindness
is greater than tzedaka because tzedaka is done
with ones money while lovingkindness may
be done with ones money or with ones
person.
In HGSS, we seek to live up to the Jewish mission
to promote these values. We have invited our
members to give of their belongings through
our collections for children in the Ukraine,
people in Africa and disadvantaged families
in London and to give of their money to assist
needy families at Pesach. We have encouraged
the giving of time and energy in our giant communal
fruit salad making in which we produced food
for 1340 homeless people. Through our Mitzvah
Day Programme, we have offered our community
the opportunity to engage in a whole range of
chesed activities including visiting residents
of old age homes, playing with children with
special needs, making mugs for the homeless
and much more.
