Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue, (affectionately known as Norrice Lea) is an Orthodox Synagogue, a constituent of the United Synagogue. Formed in 1933, it is still growing and developing.
Its age profile is falling. We have nearly 1800 adult members, and in addition over a thousand children and young people under the age of 21.
Included within the Synagogue are wide provisions to meet the religious, educational, and social needs of our community. We host Kerem School, a well-respected Jewish primary school - see our Kerem School page.
We are currently seeking a senior
Rabbi, following the resignation of Rabbi Livingstone
after 11 valued years. Our Community Rabbi,
Anthony Knopf, continues to inspire the main
service as well as organising events for the
chaverim. Chazan Avromi Freilich's wonderful
voice enhances our services (without extending
their length), and he, together with Rabbi Anthony,
inspires our hesed outreach. Our youth team,
Tamar and Rafi Younger lead the teenagers, and
we have a range of children's services. We have
a Sephardi minyan and a regular hashkama.
They in turn are assisted by David
Sagal, our office chief executive, our Administrator,
Sharon Drucker and our book keeper and assistant
Brian Gray, who make up a professional team
of quality and depth.
They, together with the various members of our lay leadership, aim to be welcoming and accessible in serving our membership both old and new. Every Shabbat morning two ladies and two gentlemen make a point of welcoming new members and those old members whom we see less often. We would very much like to know anyone and everyone who would like a role in Synagogue life or to make some contribution would be most welcome.
